House on the water, Shamley Green, Surrey by C7 Architects - Architectural Photography by Mark Hazeldine

In June I completed an architectural photography shoot in Shamley Green, Surrey for Guildford based practice, C7 Architects.

THE CLIENT

C7 Architects are an architecture practice based near Guildford, Surrey, UK. Their management team, with over 30 years of combined experience, have successfully delivered projects ranging from £100k to in excess £50m across the UK.

THE PROJECT

The project consisted of converting an existing home in a stunning location next to a small, private lake. The house was given a complete remodel by the architects. They built out the main floor with a wonderful open plan living and kitchen area with huge bi-fold doors and a wooden deck with views over the beautiful lake and gardens. The house was also extended upwards, with new dormer windows added upstairs to capitalise on the views. Other rooms at the rear of the house were also renovated and added, with light-pipes used to bring light into the central areas of the house.

THE BRIEF

My client's brief was to focus on the parts of the project where they had made the most difference, which was the open plan area and new views from upstairs. They also wanted to showcase the building in the context of its surroundings and show how they brought the outside inside.

MY APPROACH

In terms of the architectural photography, I concentrated most of my compositions on the view to the house from the garden and lake, and from the house out to the garden to emphasise this new relationship.

The shoot

The big challenge to overcome on this shoot was showing how the interior looks from the outside when the bi-fold doors are fully open. The technical challenge to overcome here is that the daylight was incredibly bright relative to the dark blue kitchen and darker dining room space at the back of the house. I used multiple flash exposures to bring up the brightness of the interior to a level that the camera could record more easily, while taking care to not make it look artificial. I then had to blend these together afterwards in Photoshop to create the images you see below.

RESULTS

C7 architects were very happy with the results, saying "really great images again". They are now published on their website and being used in their marketing materials.
